Let me tell you something about this monument:
The church of Santa Croce was built between 1549 and 1646 in the area of the ancient district of San Martino, until 1541 occupied by the Jewish community resident in the Giudecca.
The exterior has a facade divided into two distinct stylistic orders: in the lower one the decoration is still typically Renaissance; the upper order shows the triumph of baroque decoration. Between the two orders there is a balustrade supported by imposing human, animal and fantastic figures with a complex symbolic meaning.
The interior, with three naves, illuminated by the large rose window, has splendid baroque altars carved in the golden local stone.
Among the most important is the one dedicated to Sant'Oronzo, in the middle of the right aisle, remembered for having saved the city from the terrible earthquake of 1743, and the altar of San Francesco di Paola, in the transept on the left, completely covered with a decoration similar to a stone lace.
